Zenvoyage
The first of these books was told out loud over days, on a mountain in the
Himalaya, to a small child. They grew up to form a complete storyline empowering children of
all ages.
They make one voyage, in order: the major archetypes and the patterns of behaviour laid
down early, so a young reader goes on into later life carrying a compass rather than a rule.
More than two thousand pages, full colour throughout.
Nothing in them is talked down to. The shadow is not the enemy; the way out is not the way
you came in; and a reader is trusted with both.
Shelves in children's fiction and young-adult. Of particular interest to
Steiner, Waldorf and Montessori schools, and to school and public libraries building a series
that is read in sequence.

The termites had been carrying the same grain of sand past the same corner
for two hours, and Smilo had not moved.
He was lying on his front in the dirt with his chin on his hands, which is the correct position,
and his elbows had gone past hurting into that numb state where you have made a decision about
them. ZENVOYAGE, BOOK ONE

thinks to ask them. ZENVOYAGE
Book One
Smilo and the Unexpected Encounter
The village boys chase him into the jungle, and the thing he meets there is bigger than a horse and in none of the stories he has been told. Both of them come away marked. Smilo learns that the thing frightening him is frightened too.

Book Two
Smilo and the Veiled Meadows
The meadow's smells change faster than he can hold them, and Smilo tries to carry all of it home. By evening the armful of flowers is dead in his arms. Wanting is not wrong — it simply does not stop when it is fed.

Book Three
Smilo and the Enchanted Forest
There is a wooden boat at the water's edge, unguarded, and it is exactly the boat he wanted when he was five — which is the part that should worry him. Some wants can be put down; some have to be lived all the way out, and from the inside you cannot tell which one you are holding.

Book Four
Smilo and the Lake of Shadows
The lake shows Smilo what he is most afraid of, and he believes the lake. Anger is fuel and anger is fog; kept circling it carries you nowhere, and crossed over, the same fire becomes the clean fierce no that stands in front of somebody smaller.

Book Five
Smilo and the Bewildering Jungle
Everything in this jungle touches him — some of it kind, most of it bristling — and he has to choose which frightening thing to approach with an open hand. Giving without expecting anything back turns out to be the only thing that ever makes him feel like enough.

Book Six
Smilo and the Mind-Bending Maze
Every sound in the maze comes back doubled and wrong, until Smilo cannot tell his own voice from its echo. The way out is not the way he came in. It is learning to listen properly, and to say the true thing clearly enough that it carries.

Book Seven
Smilo and the Freaky Quest
They set out for the sun, through heat that blinds, and partway there Seraphina falls ill. Nobody asks Smilo to let her go. What carries him the rest of the way is not courage — it is trust, and it costs him more than anything has so far.

Book Eight
Smilo and the Path of Trial
Dust swallows the sky, the sun and the village, and an old prophecy about the clan tree turns out to concern somebody who does not know it is him. Everything the voyage has laid down is asked for at once — and what answers is not a power. It is being with everyone and everything.

MYST · MEGHA · MYTH — historical fiction that takes its heroine out of nineteen years in the Sydney CBD and into the Himalaya, carried by the queens who set the record straight before the word feminism existed.
THE SPINE — classical Rāja Yoga and the Yoga Sūtras in plain language. It is carried in rich eloquent visuals of rivers, fences, gardens, animals and weeds. Nothing in it is hard going or dry meta-science — and it is often more humorous than a book on the Sūtras is expected to be.
About the author
Matri was born in Palekh, the old Russian village of icon-painters, and raised in Kyrgyzstan
from the age of two, on the old Central Asian corridor, and studied the history of civilisations
with Central Asia as her field. India received her at twenty‑five — the country that had been lying
just over those mountains the whole time. Her grandmother's own collection, some three thousand
Russian volumes, travelled with her, and she now writes near the sea, in the Northern Rivers.
She teaches Rāja Yoga internationally.
